Applying for a job with us
You will need to complete an application form. The application form can be downloaded and completed electronically or you can contact us for a printed copy – once completed it can be emailed or posted to us. Recruiting officers will score your application against the ‘role requirements’ to gauge how well you meet the skills, capabilities, education, experience, and knowledge needed for the role. Your score will be based on whether you fully or partially meet these.
When completing your application your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview.
We want to hear about your experience and skills in your own words. While we appreciate that some applicants may use AI tools, we ask that their use is kept to a minimum in your application.
We are particularly interested in how your background aligns with our values and the skills required for the role. Please provide clear, real examples from your own experience. To support you, we offer guidance on using the STAR model, which can help you present your examples clearly and comprehensively. Each job advert also includes detailed information about the skills and experience we are looking for, as well as the job description and person specification.
All applications are reviewed by at least two hiring officers, and no AI is used in this assessment process.
Use the STAR method to show your skills and experience in answers to a supporting statement as well as for interview questions.
What STAR stands for and how to use it
- Situation - briefly describe the context this took place in, for instance work, school, volunteering or another setting and set the scene by describing whether this was a project you were working on or a challenge you were facing.
- Task - briefly describe what you had to do and the purpose of the task
- Action - explain what you did, how and when you did it. Tell us about the processes you used, the reasons for the choices you made and the key things you did to deal with the situation.
- Result - tell us what the outcomes of your actions were and what difference they made
When to use STAR
You can use the STAR method to structure the examples you give in your:
- Statement section of your application form
- answers to questions
- interview
Visit the National Careers Service website for more information on how to use the STAR method.
After the closing date, the recruiting manager will look at all applications received. We will only contact those selected for interview.
If you weren’t selected for interview don’t let this put you off applying for other roles with us.
If there is anything you need to prepare for the interview, we will let you know in your invite. During the interview most of the questions you will be asked will be linked to the behaviours and competencies listed on the Key Tasks section of the Job Description and the criteria in the Person Specification.
We will also let you know where the interview will take place, whether any kind of exercise will take place as part of the interview, and who we expect to be interviewing you.
We want you to feel as confident and comfortable as you can be in this situation, so please contact the person named on the job advert in advance of your interview day if you need any adjustments or have any questions about the process – we want to help you to work at your best.
Prepare for your interview by re-reading the job advert, the job description and person specification and your application.
Think about what skills the hiring organisation is looking for and how your experience and abilities meet the job requirements. You'll need to expand on the points you've already mentioned in your application.
You'll have a chance to ask questions at the end. The interviewers will let you know when you're likely to hear if you have been offered the job.
