Saturday 29th July – Friday 15th September 2017
Littlehampton Museum is delighted to announce the opening of our big summer exhibition ‘The Collectors’, a fantastic experience forthe whole family!
The exhibition will focus on telling the fascinating story of Littlehampton’s local collectors, and how the collection was born.
From early travellers to modern day metal detectorists, the Museum has enjoyed a long and very important relationship with a variety of collectors. Much of the Museum’s collection is made up of generous donations from local residents and kind benefactors. Visitors will be taken on a journey through the interesting but often strange history of collecting, beginning in the 1600s, through the opening of the Museum in 1928, right up to the present day.
On display will be a variety of weird and wonderful objects that represent the Museum’s eclectic collection of fine art, photographs, natural history, and social history objects. These items will be complemented by loans from other organisations and Littlehampton collectors, to create a thoroughly exciting display.
There will be plenty for children to see and do, the Museum team are putting on four arts and crafts workshops on different themes, all related to the exhibition. These will be drop-in sessions, free of charge:
Ancient Egypt - Wednesday 2nd August, 10am-12pm
Roman Sussex - Thursday 10th August, 2-4pm
Natural History - Tuesday 15th August, 10am-12pm
Treasure Hunters - Wednesday 23rd August, 2-4pm
“The story of Littlehampton Museum’s collection is fascinating”, said Peter Herbert, Town Clerk, “and the history of our local collectors is equally captivating!”
